  • Wrong trowel notch: a 4 mm notch under a 60 cm tile leaves voids — coverage and bag count are wrong from the start.
  • Skipping back-buttering on large or outdoor tiles: you need full contact, so real use runs ~1.6× the flat figure.
  • Mixing more than you can lay in the pot life (often 30 min); skinned-over adhesive no longer bonds.
  • Grouting too soon: trapped moisture causes efflorescence and color shading.
  • Ignoring joint width: 2 mm vs 5 mm joints can double grout consumption.
